Kids love fire trucks says Grunstein to explain why he bought the rig about five years ago. Inside the truck has been refurbished to accommodate a dental chair and space for Grunstein to conduct examinations. In some ways he says it s more effective than his office. Grunstein s is a creative solution to an urgent problem. The consequences can be severe. Oral health is needed for normal growth the authors wrote. Sometimes poor dental health can be lethal. Children with poor teeth are in pain he says. It s just not true that they don t feel it. Herman says very few general dentists who are also trained to treat children will see them. Grunstein is a general dentist though pediatric dentists work in his downtown Paterson office. Kids generally don t like dentists and dentists don t like to treat squir! ming screaming children. Little kids require a lot of patience to be gentle and to communicate with them says Herman. It takes a certain breed of person and a certain breed of dentist to work with them. That shortage of dentists willing to treat children hits poor areas hardest. As Grunstein puts it people who can afford not to see Medicaid patients don t see Medicaid patients. The neighborhood around the school is populated with low rent apartments. They are going to be a disaster Grunstein says before examining the kids. As the children file through the fire truck his estimation proves correct. Janyah Pineiro has one cavity. Gustav Hernandez who s about to turn has six. Emelin Betances has just one but it s big. Below the tooth her gum bubbles out red and infected. Grunstein flags these children for follow up care. But getting that care could be another story. Many parents don t understand the importance of taking their child to the dentist. People wait unt! il there s a problem and then get the teeth pulled out says Herman. T hat s not what we re driving for. We re driving for prevention. Parental apathy is a main reason Grunstein goes directly to the kids. His goal is to get the kids excited about going in for an examination. Today at least it s working. Who wants to go in the fire truck Grunstein asks pointing inside where an examining chair is waiting. Herb Jackson s notebook on covering Congress and Washington.
